Xiao joined the group in August 2018 as a Marie Curie Fellow. He undertook his PhD with Prof Clare Grey FRS at the University of Cambridge where he studied the structure, morphology and reaction mechanism of novel electrode materials using a series of X-ray scattering and absorption techniques. Soon after he received his PhD, Xiao became a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the group of Prof Ullrich Steiner at Adolphe Merkle Insitute in Switzerland working on the study of structure-property relationship of mesoporous electrode materials. During this postdoc time, he has developed a strong interest in using PDF to study materials with complex crystal structures. For Xiao’s Marie Curie research, he will focus on methodology development to better understand the structure of disordered and amorphous battery electrode materials and the impact of these structural properties on the materials’ performances.
Outside of work Xiao is passionate about drawing with pencils and has recently picked up oil brushes to give his drawings a touch of colour.
